You can mix and match your flower and herb planting if you have a limited space and want to grow both, by using some herbs as useful ground cover edgings –these utilise space otherwise usually just given over to weeds. This is a really good idea and takes little maintenance.

You can use low-growing mat-forming herbs to enclose small herb beds OR to line your flower beds.

Plants to use for edgings:

Marjoram – especially the golden marjoram- which form nice mats. These may need a trim in spring every year to prevent their spread where you don’t want them.

Chives

Creeping Thyme – there are lots of different colours and types, and make a nice edging –though Thyme doesn’t like heavy ground. If it does like the ground it may need trimming more often

Chamomile – small plants of creeping chamomile if kept trimmed

Violets – Viola cornuta if in shade or partial shade

Small species of lavender – like Imperial Gem (lovely deep colour too)

Strawberry plants – these will spread but stay low – and a bonus of producing lovely berries for you or the birds – but cover up for winter.
