This is a remedy made from infused herb oils (see method for Rosemary) . To make a liniment for tired or aching legs, shoulders or arms by mixing 1 part of the herb infused oil with 1 part of the herbal tincture (or alcohol and water). Shake well and then apply. Liniments can also be used where infused oils on their own may be too strong – for example, to rub on joints in arthritic conditions. Try Rose oil and Camomile tincture which is very soothing, or Thyme/Rosemary infused oil with peppermint tincture – an optional pinch of cayenne or ginger is good for aches and pains after flu. Here is an old recipe (not recommended !) for a Herbal liniment.
Volatile liniment: Take Spirit of harsthorn 1oz, olive oil, 1 ½ oz; cayenne pepper 2 drs, laudanum, 2 drachms; a tablespoon of salt and two of brandy. Shake well in a bottle. Rub the affected part with it –apply afterwards a rag saturated with it. It removes pain and swellings. It is a magic remedy. Notice the similarity of some ingredients and method.
