Infused oils such as rosemary (see recipe on earlier article), camomile, rose and particularly marigold are good for making a solid salve to put on sore skin, such as chapped, inflamed or damaged skin or for piles. Thicken the oil into a salve by melting the oil into beeswax in the proportion 4:1. Also good are wild herbs such as chickweed and plantain. Here also is a salve recipe from Consult me over 100 years old.
For a Family Salve – Take the root of yellow dock and dandelion, equal parts ; add a good proportion of celandine and plantain. Extract the juices by steeping or pressing. Strain and simmer the liquid with sweet cream or fresh butter and mutton tallow, or you may take sweet oil and mutton tallow. Simmer together until no appearance of the liquid remains. Before it is quite cold, put it into boxes as you may desire. This is one of the most soothing and healing preparations for burns, scalds, cuts and sores of every description that can be produced.
