Herbal Medicine has long had recipes for the relief of headaches, and a range of herbs have been prescribed by herbal practitioners including
· Chamomile
· Lime flowers
· Valerian
· Wild lettuce
· Rosemary
· Peppermint

A Herbal Decoction for the Relief of Headache (1902 – Consult Me)
Take a small handful of centaury, and as much feverfew, and one ounce of camomile flowers to two quarts of water. Boil to one quart and then add while hot half an ounce of rhubarb and stir well. Dose – a wineglassful three times a day.
OR The juice of half a lemon in a cup of black coffee “seldom fails to cure a headache or if taken in time, to prevent one from developing”.
But the BIG news is about Feverfew
The big success story in herbal treatment for headache is feverfew which some studies have had positive findings on the prevention of migraine when taken fresh and daily. It's thought to work by quelling the release of serotonin.
One research overview of trials of feverfew says “Such information as is available from high-quality trials favours feverfew over placebo for the prevention of migraine headaches. The very high levels of statistical significance found in the positive trials suggest that larger studies looking at standardised feverfew extracts would make sense especially with the low level of adverse effects.”
I  have tried a number of different treatments – drugs AND herbs for migraine. I have to say that for most situations of having a warning of a migraine developing it is easier to take a tablet. However, during the period I had large clumps of Feverfew in the garden AND a weekend problem with stress headaches I found that an infusion taken from Thursday evening worked excellently.  I cannot attest to the effect of the dried herb, though I’d be interested to hear of your experiences.
